Cynthia Erivo: biography

Cynthia Erivo is a talented actress and singer with one of the most beautiful and strong voices. She is best known for her starring role as Celie in the Broadway revival of musical The Color Purple.

Childhood and youth

Speaking of the background of the singer, her parents were Nigerian, but she was born in Stockwell, South London. During her college years, Cynthia got an education at La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls' School. After finishing school, she started to study music psychology, then, a year later, she continued her studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She was a very bright girl who impressed everybody with her powerful voice.

Career

The career of Cynthia has begun after she got acting roles in British TV programs: Chewing Gum and The Tunnel. The critics highly praised her performances, and she was offered the first stage role in Marine Parade. Her popularity continued to rise and she performed in her first musical role at Theatre Royal Stratford East.

In 2013, the actress had the part of Celie Harris in the Menier Chocolate Factory production of The Color Purple.

In 2014, the artist was given the role of Chenice in the West End musical I Can't Sing! The X Factor Musical. After the success in acting, Cynthia got an offer to record the track "Fly Before You Fall" to the American musical drama Beyond the Lights. It was a fantastic performance which made Cynthia one of the best singers of her time.

In 2015, the actress debuted in the Broadway performance of The Color Purple. She had the role of Celie Harris alongside American actress Jennifer Hudson as Shug Avery. In 2017, the singer and the cast of The Color Purple were nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for their performance on NBC's The Today Show in May 2016. The same year, the actress visited The Daily Show to talk about "The Color Purple" musical.

In 2017, Erivo performed "God Only Knows" alongside the singer John Legend, as a tribute to musicians who had died over the past year. She also took part in the charity benefit "Night of too Many Stars" hosted by Jon Stewart. In February, it was reported that Cynthia was offered the title role in Harriet, a biographical film about American abolitionist Harriet Tubman. That was released in November, 2019.

In 2018, the actress starred as part of the seven-actor ensemble of the movie Bad Times at the El Royale. Also that year, she appeared in the famous movie Widows, alongside Viola Davis, it was her first cinema role.

In January 2019, Cynthia played roles in the HBO's series adaptation of Stephen King's novel The Outsider.

Her performance of the song "You Can't Hurry Love" in the movie 'Bad Times at the El Royale' remains one of the best movie moments of 2018. In 2019, the actress may have quickly gained Hollywood’s attention and promised her fans a studio album comprised of “songs “that make you feel good, let you cry, and tell the truth.” Cynthia also will appear in 2020 on the screens in Chaos Walking, based on Patrick Ness' trilogy novels.

In a series of live performances that took place outside of the Richard Rodgers Theatre, the singer performed Beyonce's song that was adored by her fans who named Cynthia the greatest vocal force on Broadway.

After a sold-out debut with the previous show, Erivo returns to the historic Harlem venue for the soulful celebration of the holiday season for Night Divine at the Apollo Theater. She show will be held on December 16, 2019.

Personal life

The singer is known to have relationships with the British actor Dean John-Wilson. There is no information when the two began dating, presumably they met each other in 2016. The couple tried to keep their relations far from the knowledge of the fans and the media. However, the fans could see a lovely picture of Cynthia and Dean on her Instagram account which she posted on Valentine's Day 2019. Below the photo, she left comments on his birthday and expressed her love for Dean. At present, they have no husband-wife relationship. No doubt, the careers of both take a lot of time. Perhaps, in the near future, their relationship will move to a new level.
