Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a Canadian professional basketball player who currently plays as a point guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Childhood and youth

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was born on July 12, 1998, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in a basketball family, as his mother and father both played basketball at the collegiate level. His father, Vaughn Alexander, played at Western Kentucky University, while his mother, Charmaine Gilgeous, played at McMaster University.

Gilgeous-Alexander grew up playing basketball and honing his skills at a young age. He played for several teams in his hometown of Hamilton before attending high school at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In high school, he was a standout player and helped lead his team to a state championship in his senior year.

After high school, Gilgeous-Alexander committed to playing college basketball at the University of Kentucky, where he became a star player on the Wildcats team. He was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and the All-SEC Second Team in his lone season at Kentucky.

In the 2020-21 season, Gilgeous-Alexander continued to improve, but was limited to just 35 games due to a foot injury. He still managed to average 23.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game and shoot 50.8% from the field and 41.8% from three-point range. His injury unfortunately put an end to his season and he underwent surgery in May 2021.

Despite his shortened season, Gilgeous-Alexander's strong play earned him recognition as one of the league's up-and-coming stars. He was named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week in March 2021, and was selected as a finalist for the NBA Most Improved Player Award.
