Childhood and youth
Nolan Smith was born on January 18, 2001, in Savannah, Georgia, USA. He grew up in a family of football enthusiasts, and his father, Kelvin Smith, was a linebacker for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the late 1990s. Nolan's love for football started at a very young age, and he played the sport throughout his childhood and youth.
As a student at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, Smith became one of the top high school football players in the country. He was a two-time USA Today High School All-American and was ranked as the No. 1 overall recruit in the Class of 2019 by ESPN. Smith's success on the field was matched by his success in the classroom, and he was named to the National Honor Society in high school. Nolan Smith committed to playing college football at the University of Georgia.
Football career
During his freshman season, Nolan Smith played in 11 games, tallying 18 tackles and 2.5 sacks. In the home opener against Murray State, Smith shone with 1.5 sacks and 3 tackles. As a sophomore, Smith played in all 10 regular-season games, recording 22 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He started his first game against Tennessee, contributing one tackle, and in the season opener versus Arkansas, he tallied 6 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
In his junior season, Smith played in 11 games, showcasing his talents on multiple occasions. Against South Carolina, he had a career-high of 8 tackles and forced a fumble. In the game against Vanderbilt, he was named team captain, and against rival Florida, he forced a fumble and made his first career interception within just 39 seconds. Smith also blocked a punt that resulted in a safety during the Missouri game. In total, Smith recorded 40 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 interception.
Despite being a projected first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Smith announced that he would return to Georgia for his senior season. However, his season was cut short when he tore his pectoral muscle during the game against Florida on October 29, 2022.
