Childhood and youth

Sterling "Scoot" Henderson was born on February 3, 2004, hailing from Marietta, Georgia. He was born to proud parents Chris and Crystal Henderson, who both have remarkable careers. Chris, an esteemed coach and trainer, and Crystal, a dedicated healthcare administrator, established the esteemed training facility known as Next Play 360° in Marietta. Before Sterling's arrival, the family relocated from Hempstead, New York to Georgia. Among seven siblings, Sterling stands as the second youngest. Henderson played basketball for Carlton J. Kell High School in Marietta, alongside his brother C.J. In his sophomore year, he scored a career-high 49 points, including a game-winning shot in overtime. As a junior, he broke the program's single-game and career scoring records with 53 points in a game. Henderson led Kell to the state title game and earned Player of the Year honors. He decided to skip his senior year and turn professional.

Basketball career

Henderson inked a $1 million contract with the NBA G League Ignite on May 21, 2021, spanning two years. The Ignite, a developmental team associated with the NBA G League, had commenced its operations the previous year. However, Henderson's debut was delayed due to a rib injury at the start of the season. Eventually, on November 17, 2021, he made his first appearance, contributing eight points and six rebounds in a victorious 115–103 game against the South Bay Lakers. Remarkably, at the age of 17, he became the youngest player in G League history.

In his following game on November 26, Henderson achieved a career-best performance, scoring an impressive 31 points while also grabbing six rebounds and providing five assists. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, his team, the Ignite, suffered a close 112–110 loss to the Santa Cruz Warriors.

During the NBA All-Star Weekend's Rising Stars Challenge in February 2022, Henderson was selected as one of four Ignite players to participate. He represented Team Payton and contributed two points in their 50–48 defeat against Team Barry. Throughout the 2021–22 season, Henderson showcased his skills in 11 G League Showcase Cup games and 10 exhibition matches, averaging 14.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.

In October 2022, Henderson represented the Ignite in a pair of exhibition games against Metropolitans 92, featuring Victor Wembanyama, the highly anticipated projected first overall pick. In the first game on October 4, Henderson impressively scored 28 points, provided nine assists, and secured five rebounds, resulting in a 122–115 victory. However, during the second game on October 6, he sustained a bone bruise in his right knee during the first quarter, and his team experienced a 112–106 defeat.

On November 12, Henderson demonstrated his skills once again, tallying 18 points, a career-high 16 assists, and six rebounds in a triumphant 125–115 win against the Santa Cruz Warriors. Just four days later, he achieved his season-high with 27 points, in addition to five rebounds, five assists, and four steals, leading his team to a 110–95 victory over the Oklahoma City Blue. Unfortunately, on November 18, Henderson suffered a nasal fracture and concussion, causing him to miss 11 games before making his return on December 27.

A noteworthy performance came on January 10, 2023, when Henderson contributed 27 points to secure a close 123–122 win against Capitanes de Ciudad de México. In February, he was honored with the captaincy of Team Scoot in the inaugural G League Next Up Game. Furthermore, Henderson participated in the Rising Stars Challenge during the NBA All-Star Weekend, representing Team Jason Terry and scoring four points in a loss against Team Joakim.

However, on March 14, it was announced that Henderson would not participate in the remaining five games of the season. Across 25 appearances, he boasted impressive averages of 17.6 points, 6.4 assists, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game.
