He made his college debut on November 9, 2021, putting up an impressive performance with a season-high 17 points, four rebounds, and four assists in a convincing 89-65 victory against Tennessee Tech. His outstanding play earned him recognition as the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Freshman of the Week on November 15, following two standout games.

As the season progressed and the competition intensified, Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway made the decision to transition Bates to the point guard position, a role he had not previously played in high school. Adjusting to his new responsibilities proved challenging, and he faced difficulties in his performance. Furthermore, in December, Bates suffered a finger injury that forced him to sit out three games, interrupting his playing time.
