Mena Suvari: biography
Mena Alexandra Suvari is an American actress of the Estonian and Greek origin. She is known for her roles in the movies with “patriotic” titles: American Pie, American Beauty, American Horror Story, and American Virgin.
Childhood and youth
The would-be star was born into the family of a psychiatrist and a nurse. The parents dreamed of having a daughter: they had had three sons before Mena. The Estonian father gave the girl the pleasantly sounding second name, and the Greek mother’s beauty came to her. The name “Mena” was given by the girl’s aunt: it was the Egyptian goddess’s name.
The future actress spent her childhood in Newport. The family lived in an old mansion, and the kids were seeking treasure around it. Little Mena wanted to become an archeologist, and her brothers supported her.
When Suvari turned ten, the family moved to Charleston where the elder boys went to a military college. Mena attended the girls’ school Ashley Hall that had its own modeling agency. The beauty was noticed immediately; she signed her first contract at twelve.
The parents tried to provide their kids with a proper education that could guarantee successful career development. They moved to Los Angeles so that Mena could pursue modeling. However, the young woman dreamed of cinematography at that period. Besides, her height (5.35 feet or 163 cm.) was not suitable for the modeling industry.
Mena debuted in an episode of the series ER. The full-length movie debut took place in the 1997 arthouse movie Nowhere. The same year, the artist appeared in the thriller Kiss the Girls with Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd. She personified a maniac’s victim, Coty Pierce.
The chain of insignificant projects followed. In 1999, Suvari was lucky to audition for the movie American Beauty. Although her role did not include many lines, her talent shone there brightly. Mena played a high-school student who became the object of Lester Burnham’s (Kevin Spacey) love when he was disappointed in family happiness. This Academy-Award-winning movie made the actress famous. Journalists interviewed her; glossy magazines printed her pictures; Maxim named Mena one of the hottest Hollywood women. Movie makers showered her in new offers.
The comedy American Pie (1999) also brought recognition. In fact, nobody expected the ordinary youth movie to be an international hit. Despite the pabulum and third-rate humor, people all over the globe watched it gladly; the project grossed 20 times as much as the budget was ($235 and $11 million correspondingly). Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Alyson Hannigan, and Tara Reid turned into superstars.
The same year, Mena participated in the thriller The Rage: Carrie 2 and the catastrophe movie Atomic Train.
Overall, Suvari has played in more than 50 thrillers, horrors, comedies, dramas, TV series, and full-fledged movies. She is a diverse actress capable of presenting young starlets and wise women with equal persuasive power. However, she has not had her star role yet.
Loser (2000) and Stuck (2007) brought the lead pats. In 2008, Suvari joined the cast of the horror Day of the Dead about zombies hunting living people. The actress gained the role of Sarah Bowman, who was trying to save her closest people from the danger.
The actress’s episodic and secondary roles were equally brilliant; she lived the lives of her characters. One can remember Suvari in the comedy Beauty Shop and the comedy series Six Feet Under; the crime action Domino with Keira Knightley and Mickey Rourke was also worth noticing. In the family movie Rumor Has It, the artist collaborated with Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner.
In the 2010s, Mena appeared in the mysterious horror drama South of Hell and personified Maria Abascal in eight episodes; they were aired on WE TV.
Since the early 2000s, Suvari prefers serious arthouse projects in theater and cinematography: she was fed up with shallow girls and nymphets.
In the thriller American Horror Story: Murder House, the artist received the role of Elizabeth Short. This character’s murder had not been solved, and her body was found in a park later. 50 years later, Elizabeth’s ghost appeared in the house where she was murdered. Mena had to wear the makeup imitating a face cut; she was also wearing a dark wig.
Suvari did not ignore the sequel of the American Pie franchise and took part in American Pie 2. In 2012, she came back to the same role in American Reunion and visited many cities with the premiere presentation.
The actress worked on the series Clarence and Hysteria. The horror Don't Blink, the comedy The Opposite Sex, and the crime thriller Blade of Honor brought her the lead parts. The latter project also starred Martin Sheen and Lochlyn Munro.
Mena Suvari used to be bullied at school because of her unusual name and red hair. When she grew up, the woman had her hair dyed ash blond. The actress confessed in one of her interviews that her relationships with girl peers left much to be desired, and boys were mocking her all the time. As a result, Mena did not go to the prom: she had no friend to accompany her.
The artist married at the age of 22, right after the movie American Beauty and the following Academy Award ceremony. The 39-year-old cameraman Robert Brinkmann was her husband; the couple spent five years together.
Further on, the celebrity dated the dancer Mike Carrasco. She changed her style, had her hair cut short, and took an interest in painting, photography, and playing the piano. As the partner criticized the woman’s dance skills, she took up breakdance classes as well. Although Mena and Mike broke up soon, these hobbies proved to be useful for Suvari.
In 2007, the producer Simone Sestito became the actress’s boyfriend. They married in 2010. There were speculations about the celebrity’s pregnancy, but no children were born in this family. A year and a half later, Mena filed for divorce: the spouses were completely different people. Their separation was scandalous: the bankrupt producer sued the artist because of maintenance payments.
Age is not only about wrinkles: it gives much experience. Mena Suvari is known for her impeccable style. In 2016, she appeared at a party in Cologne in a low-neck dress with a geometric print; it revealed the tattoos on her back and neck: “Word Sound Power”. Fans recognized these words: the actress had posted the photos of the tattoo creation on Twitter and Instagram.
Mena is not tall, and she looks even more fragile due to her proportions: a short, tiny body and a large head. Rumors have it the celebrity has had surgery, but it is hardy so: the actress’s pictures do not support this theory.
Mena and her colleague, the British actress Emma Watson, bear much resemblance; Suvari is eleven years older than the Harry Potter star. The artists were particularly similar when they both had short haircuts.
Today, Suvari is not a frequent guest of official events. In 2018, journalists emphasized that the actress put on some weight.
Nevertheless, Mena does not pay attention to criticism: she is absolutely satisfied with her life and posts many pictures on Instagram. In 2018, she participated in the comedy series American Woman and American Horror Story: Apocalypse.
