Katheryn Winnick: biography

Katheryn Winnick is a Canadian actress of the Ukrainian origin. She became a frequently discussed person after the TV series Vikings, although she had participated in almost 60 movies by that moment.

Katheryn was born on December 17, 1977, in Etobicoke that later was integrated to Toronto and spent her childhood and youth there. The girl’s name was Katerina Vinitskaya. Her ancestors used to live in West Ukraine and moved to Germany in 1940 as political refugees persecuted by the Soviet Union; later, they migrated to Canada.

Katheryn had three siblings: a sister Daria and two brothers, Adam and Markjan. Adam became a Canadian military man and served in Afghanistan; Markjan followed his sister’s example and built an acting career.

Although Winnick grew up in the English-speaking world, she did not understand the English language: the family and community used only the Ukrainian. Thanks to school education, the girl learned English and French. However, the actress considers Ukrainian her native language.

As a teenager, Katheryn joined a national scout organization Plast. She developed much interest in sports there and did taekwondo and karate; by the way, she practiced with boys. By 17, Winnick won the black belt in both martial arts. The young woman also took part in the Canadian championship among women and gained a silver medal.

At the age of 21, Katheryn suddenly changed her occupation and went to America. Soon, she entered the drama school: William Esper Studio in New York. After graduation, the young talent started conquering the world of cinematography.

Movies

Katheryn Winnick debuted in 1999. She appeared in several TV projects: the sci-fi series PSI Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal, the adventure series Relic Hunter, and the crime thriller Oz.

Further on, the actress got some more significant roles in the horror Amusement and the romantic comedy Failure to Launch starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker. The actress’s appearance in the crime movie Stand Up Guys, the comedy The Art of the Steal, the humorous action movie Killers, and the tragicomedy Cold Souls where she played the Russian actress was notable as well.

In Love & Other Drugs, the actress had the chance to collaborate with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. She got an episodic yet bright role of Lisa whose attention the main character tries to gain from time to time.

In 2012, Katheryn played Ivana in the movie A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III that was shown at Rome Film Fest. The actress performed the song “Águas de Março” with Charlie Sheen.

2013 was marked with a breakthrough: the artist personified Lagertha in the historical series Vikings; the project’s ratings were high, and it was extended for several seasons.

Personal life

There is no reliable information about the actress’s personal life; she is not married. Judging by the social networks, the woman started dating the American businessman Nick Loeb who was two years older than her. However, it is unknown if they are in a relationship nowadays.

Katheryn Winnick has passed the exams and became a licensed bodyguard.

According to the actress, she follows the events in Ukraine and openly supports the people. She believes that the Ukrainians are fighting for freedom and democracy and will make the country stronger, and the citizens’ lives will become more comfortable.

Similar to many Hollywood stars, Katheryn has an Instagram account where millions of people follow her. The artist shares personal photos and backstage pictures and videos there. Besides, Winnick has a Twitter page.

Present days

Katheryn Winnick’s career continues to develop. The sixth season of the series Vikings has been announced. The Russian actor Danila Kozlovsky will appear in the project and play Oleg of Novgorod.

In 2017, Katheryn worked on the catastrophe movie Geostorm starring Gerard Butler. While the audience welcomed the movie warmly, critics’ reviews were mostly negative. Winnick played a secondary character, the wife of Butler’s character, but the scenes with her were reshot with another actress.

Not long ago, Katheryn had appeared in The Dark Tower, the screen adaptation of Stephen King’s novel. She played the main character’s mother. Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba became her stage partners.

In 2018, the artist got one of the lead parts in the thriller Speed Kills.

The movie Polar is the celebrity’s recent work. It is the screen version of the Dark Horse comics Polar: Came From the Cold. The premiere took place in January 2019.
