Lara Logan: biography

Lara Logan is a journalist for American news agencies. She has gained multiple awards, including three Emmy Awards, two Murrow Awards, and five Gracie Awards. Her career as a journalist began when she worked as a reporter for the Sunday Tribune in her hometown of Durban, South Africa. She would then work for the Daily News and Reuters in Africa. She then worked as an editor, producer, and reporter for ITN, CBS, ABC, CNN, NBC, among other news agencies.

In 2006, CBS assigned Logan as its Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent. She covered the Egyptian Revolution in 2011. While covering the celebrations in Tahrir Square, she was sexually assaulted by several men. She was eventually rescued by a group of Muslim women who helped her return to her crew. Lara Logan’s CBS career ended when she left back in 2018. She appeared in several interviews on Fox News, speaking extensively on the status of journalism and media bias.

Early Life

Logan was born in Durban, South Africa on March 29, 1971. She took a degree in commerce in the University of Natal in Durban and graduated in 1992.

She then continued to earn a diploma in French history, culture, and language from the Université de l'Alliance Française in Paris.

Career

Logan began her journalism career as a reporter for Durban’s Sunday Tribune while she was still a student in 1988-89. She then went to work for Durban’s Daily News in 1990-1992. She then became a senior producer for Reuters Television in 1992. She would then become a freelance journalist four years after. As a freelancer, she had jobs as a reporter, editor, and producer for INT, Fox/Sky, NBC, CBS, London’s ABC, and the European Broadcast Union. She reported on the 1998 bombings in the United States embassies in Nairobi and Tanzania, the Kosovo war, and the conflicts in Northern Ireland under CNN.

In 2000, The UK’s GMTV Breakfast Television hired Logan as a correspondent. She would also work as a freelance correspondent with CBS News Radio. Following the September 11 attack, she filed for a travel visa to Afghanistan from a clerk in the Russian Embassy in London. Lara Logan in Afghanistan in November 11 was aired under GMTV. She infiltrated the Bagram Air Base, for a Lara Logan interview General Abdul Wahid Baba Jan, commander of the United Islamic Front for the Salvation of Afghanistan which was backed by the USA and the United Kingdom.

She then received an offer as a full-time correspondent for CBS in 2002. For the next four years, she was a reporter on conflict-ridden areas alongside the United States Armed Forces. She would often be seen in Afghanistan or Iraq, reporting where very few people had the courage to. While not on a battlefield, she would interview famous people and explorers. For CBS’ 60 Minutes, she interviewed Robert Ballard, the explorer who found the wreck of the RMS Titanic. She had also contributed regularly for the CBS Evening News, Face the Nation, and the Early Show. Logan was then promoted to CBS’ Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent in February 2006.

In August 2018, Logan left CBS news. She then went to the Sinclair Broadcast group the next year on a temporary basis. She serves there as the correspondent on the United States-Mexico border for 90 days. Starting May 1, Sinclair’s 191 television stations will begin producing two segments on the subject per week.

Achievements

Among the awards, Lara Logan has Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Award as a war correspondent for “60 Minutes: A Relentless Enemy”. Produced under CBS, this episode of 60 minutes featured Logan and her team’s eyewitness account of the conflict in Afghanistan. While they were stationed in the US Army combat outpost, they came under fire more than a dozen times in their two-week assignment. The award is considered by many as the broadcaster’s equivalent of a Pulitzer Prize.

Logan has also won an Edward R. Murrow award for a series of reports under CBS Evening News with Kate Couric. She has also received two Emmy Awards and several Emmy nominations. She won the Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast in 2007 for her work in CBS Evening News with Bob Schieffer in 2005 for the segment "Ramadi: On the Front Line" which reported on the Battle of Ramadi during the Iraq War. The same segment also won a Murrow Award and an Overseas Press Club Award. She won another Emmy Award for Outstanding Interview in 2011 for 60 Minutes for the segment "Medal of Honor" where she interviews Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, the only living Medal of Honor awardee since the Vietnam War.

In 2017, Logan wins the Emmy Award for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a News Magazine for 60 Minutes for the segment "Battle for Mosul", where she reports from Mosul, Iraq as the Iraqi military fought alongside various allied military forces and militia to reclaim Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), officially known as Islamic State (IS). She would also receive several Emmy Awards nominations for her work in 60 Minutes and one nomination for her work in CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.

Logan has also received five American Women in Radio and Television Gracie Awards. She won the Best News Story Award for her coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for CBS News Radio. She won another Best News Story Award for her coverage of the war in Afghanistan for CBS News Radio in 2002, another in 2003 for her report on the assassination attempt on Hamid Karzai, president of Afghanistan. She received the Gracie Award for Individual Achievement for Best Reporter/Correspondent in 2004 and Outstanding Feature-Hard News in 2008.

Personal Life

Lara Logan has been married several times. She was first married to Jason Siemon in 1998. They had a child together named Ashley Siemon. The pair divorced in 2008 for undisclosed reasons. She would then marry Joe Burkett in November 2008. Logan and Burkett met during the conflict in Afghanistan.

Logan was there as CBS’ war correspondent and Burkett was a U.S. government defense contractor. They have two children, Joseph and Lola Burkett. Logan is not reported to have any marital trouble.
