Luis Fonsi: biography

Luis Fonsi is one of the most popular Latino-American singers who attracts listeners from all over the world with his touching and romantic songs. Fonsi became famous due to the single “Despacito” recorded with Daddy Yankee.

Childhood and youth

Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero was born on April 15, 1978, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

From the early childhood, the boy was interested in the world of art. When Luis was six, his parents took him to the local children’s choir where he participated for four years. Later, the family moved to Orlando. By that time, the would-be singer spoke no English, but he mastered the language in a month.

At school, Luis was the member of the group The Big Guys; he and his three friends created it to perform in front of students, teachers, and parents at various events.

The group was immensely popular; the representatives of the basketball club Orlando Magic invited The Big Guys to one of their matches to sing the US national anthem. That day, Luis realized what he would like to do for the rest of his life.

In 1995, the hard-working young man received the grant to study at the Florida State University School of Music. Fonsi learned solfeggio, vocal, and sound harmonization. The student often traveled with his group in different cities; for instance, the trip to London proved to be significant as Luis had the opportunity to perform with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Music

Three years later, in 1998, the singer had his debuting album Comenzare (I Will Begin) released. Since that time, the artist continues to surprise people all over the world. The album was a great hit in Puerto Rico and Latin America; Fonsi became famous in Columbia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, and Venezuela.

In 2000, the next album Eterno came out and achieved success. At that period, Fonsi recorded the song “Si no te hubiera conocido” with Christina Aguilera; this work was included in her Spanish-language album (released in 2000). Thus, Europe also got acquainted with Lusi Fonsi.

In 2002, the albums Amor Secreto and English-language Fight the Feeling were presented.

Fight the Feeling was not very popular in the United States, and critics expected Fonsi, who had lived in Orlando for the most of his life, to make another attempt to conquer the hearts of the Americans. The fifth album Abrazar la Vida reached commercial success; the single “Quien te Dijo Eso?” topped positions in European music charts and kept them for a couple of weeks.

The following album Paso a Paso brought the artist the international glory. The song ‘Nada es Para Siempre” became number one in many charts and was nominated for the Latin Grammy Award. The singer was also invited to the KQ Live concert.

In September 2008, Fonsi stormed Billboard Hot 100 with his new hit “No Me Doy Por Vencido”; the single started from the 98th position and climbed up to number 92 in several days. “No Me Doy Por Vencido” was the artist’s first song that got to Billboard Hot Latin Tracks.

2011 was marked with the new album Tierra Firme; three years later, 8 was released.

At the beginning of 2017, the US Billboard announced the list of American Music Awards-2017 nominees. Fonsi could have gained four out of ten awards: Video of the Year, Favorite Song – Pop/Rock, Favorite Artist – Latin, and Collaboration of the Year.

The ceremony took place on November 19 in Los Angeles. Hundreds of fans waited for their favorite to appear on the red carpet. However, only Russian fans were lucky to see the singer: that day, the musician gave a concert in Russia.

Personal life

Despite his celebrity status, Fonsi manages to keep his personal life secret. No matter how hard the media tried to find something compromising, they failed.

In 2006, Luis married the Puerto Rican actress Adamari López; in 2010, the couple divorced.

In December 2011, the Spanish model Águeda López gave birth to the daughter Mikaela. Three years later, in September 2014, the lovers married officially. In 2016, their son Rocco was born.

Present days

In November 2017, Luis performed in Russia; he presented both old and new hits. Few people know that Fonsi should have sung “Despacito” with Alexey Chaichyts, the participant of the Russian reality show Dom-2. Several days before the concert, the young man called the singer.

Lesha had dreamed of singing with Fonsi for a long time; when he got lucky and gained the personal invitation to the concert, he immediately contacted him. Chaichyts offered to perform the most frequently listened song “Despacito,” and the star agreed. When Despacito started singing, he got cut off and failed to reach the artist again.

The same month, the music video “Echame La Culpa” with charming Demi Lovato came out. The video has had more than a million views, and this figure is growing.
