Vasiliy Lomachenko: biography

Vasiliy Lomachenko is a Ukrainian boxer. He became a world champion in three weight classes: featherweight, super featherweight and junior lightweight. His fans know this sportsman under his Hi-Tech, The Matrix and Loma aliases.

Childhood and youth

The future celebrity was born on 17 February 1988 in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, in the Soviet Union, on the territory of the Ukrainian SSR. He attended the local Pedagogical University before becoming a professional boxer and relocating to the US.

His mom's name is Tetiana, she's a gymnastics instructor. Vasyl has a sister named Anastasia.

His dad's name is Anatoly, he's a professional boxing trainer. Anatoly acted as the first trainer for his son. He made Vasyl take gymnastics and ballet classes. Only after that, he let the boy fight in the ring. Otherwise, this guy could have become a professional ice hockey player. Anatoly never let Vasyl sacrifice academic studies for the sake of sports. He insisted that the boy should get good grades at school. When the grateful son grew up, he tattooed his dad's face on his torso.

Amateur boxing career

In 2007, Vasyl won against Abner Cotto at the World Championships. That was his first victory as an amateur.

He delivered outstanding results at the following World Championships matches as well as the European Championships and the Olympic Games. He won by huge margins and extremely rarely faced losses. His fight card began to attract the attention of millions of boxing fans.

Vasyl wears Venum gloves on the ring. His net worth is reported to reach $8 million.

The other boxers that he's most often compared to are Jamaine Ortiz, Richard Commey, Teofimo Lopez and Oleksandr Usyk.

Professional career

Starting with 2013, Vasyl went on to defend his belts as a professional sportsman. He got his second Olympic gold medal and inked a contract with Top Rank.

The next year, he was planning to set a world record as a featherweight boxer. He challenged Orlando Salido but lost to this veteran. However, Salido gained a few pounds and failed to fit the standards of the featherweight category. That's why Vasyl was allowed to make a second attempt to set the record. He fought against Gary Russell Jr. and won.

Vasyl's best fight in financial terms took place in 2015. He earned $750,000 for winning against Romulo Koasicha in Nevada.

He struggled to find new opponents in the featherweight category. That's why he switched to the lightweight division

Personal life

The star has a wife named Olena and two kids, Viktoria and Anatoly. They live in the US.

When Russia attacked Ukraine in 2022, Vasyl was in Greece. He quickly joined the Ukrainian army and began to fight with the territorial defense battalion of his hometown.
