Childhood and youth

Phil Nevin was born on January 19, 1971, in Fullerton, California, and grew up in the nearby city of La Mirada. As a child, he was an all-around athlete, playing baseball, football, and basketball. His father, Dick Nevin, was a high school football coach and his mother, Carole, was a teacher. Nevin credits his parents for instilling in him a strong work ethic and a love of sports.

In high school, Nevin excelled in both baseball and football. He was a standout quarterback on the football team and a power-hitting third baseman on the baseball team. In his senior year, he was named the Los Angeles Times Player of the Year in baseball and led his team to the CIF Southern Section championship.

After graduating from high school, Nevin attended Cal State Fullerton, where he continued to excel on the baseball field.
