Shaquil Barrett is a professional American football player who currently plays as an outside linebacker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the National Football League (NFL).

Childhood and youth

Shaquil Barrett was born on November 17, 1992, in Baltimore, Maryland, where he spent his childhood and youth. Growing up, he had a passion for sports and played football, basketball, and ran track. His love for football began when he was just five years old and his father introduced him to the sport. He would often play football with his friends and family in the neighborhood, developing his skills and passion for the game.

In high school, Barrett attended Boys' Latin School of Maryland, where he continued to excel in football and track. He was a three-time All-State selection in football and a two-time state champion in the 4x100 meter relay in track. Despite his success, Barrett was not heavily recruited by colleges due to his size and the perception that he was undersized for his position.

Nonetheless, Barrett's determination and work ethic earned him a spot on the University of Colorado football team as a walk-on. He worked his way up to become a starter and team captain, demonstrating his resilience and commitment to the game. His success at Colorado ultimately led him to the NFL, where he has continued to excel as a professional football player.

Football career

Shaquil Barrett's football career began in college at the University of Colorado, where he played for the Colorado Buffaloes from 2010 to 2013. He started his college career as a walk-on but quickly established himself as a valuable player on the team. In his senior season, Barrett recorded 12 sacks, 20.5 tackles for loss, and 3 forced fumbles, earning first-team All-Pac-12 honors and an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine.

Despite his impressive college career, Barrett went undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft. He signed with the Denver Broncos as a free agent and made the team's 53-man roster as a backup linebacker and special teams player. In his rookie season, he played in all 16 games, primarily on special teams, and recorded 5 tackles and a forced fumble.

Over the next few seasons, Barrett continued to improve and earn more playing time on defense. In 2017, he played in all 16 games for the Broncos and recorded 4 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and an interception. However, he remained primarily a rotational player behind Pro Bowl outside linebackers Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware.

In 2018, Barrett became a free agent and signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in all 16 games for the Buccaneers and started three, recording 3 sacks and 28 tackles. Although his stats were not eye-popping, Barrett demonstrated his potential as a pass-rusher and earned a new contract with the Buccaneers.

In 2019, Barrett had a breakout season for the Buccaneers, leading the NFL with 19.5 sacks and earning first-team All-Pro honors. He also recorded 58 tackles, 6 forced fumbles, and an interception, establishing himself as one of the top pass-rushers in the league.

Barrett's success continued in the 2020 season, as he played a key role in the Buccaneers' Super Bowl LV championship. He recorded 8 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 forced fumble in the playoffs, including a dominant performance in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In March 2021, Barrett signed a four-year contract extension with the Buccaneers, solidifying his place as one of the team's cornerstone players for years to come. His journey from an undrafted free agent to a Super Bowl champion and All-Pro player is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

Personal life

Off the field, Shaquil Barrett is a devoted family man. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Jordanna Barrett. Barrett and his wife Jordanna tied the knot on February 2, 2012. They are proud parents of four children: Shaquil Jr., Braylon, Aaliyah, and Arrayah. Tragically, Arrayah passed away on April 30, 2023, after drowning in their family's pool.

In addition to his family life, Barrett is also involved in several philanthropic efforts. He has been an advocate for childhood literacy and has worked with local schools and libraries to promote reading and education. He has also been involved with the Special Olympics, supporting athletes with intellectual disabilities.
