The star quarterback was born and raised in Kennesaw, Georgia. His father's name is Ivant Fields. Justin's dad played football in college, but never made it to the NFL and eventually became a police officer. Ivant is very supportive of his son's career choice, and Justin credits him as the number one person behind his success. Justin's mother's name is Gina Tobey. Gina and Ivant divorced when their son was a child, but made sure both of them actively participated in Justin's life. The Chicago Bears quarterback also has two half-siblings who play softball and basketball.

Besides being a talented quarterback, he was also an exceptional basketball player, but eventually decided to pursue a career in professional football. Following his mother's advice, Justin enrolled at the University of Georgia, where he started as a backup quarterback. After his team lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2018 SEC Championship Game, the quarterback decided to transfer to Ohio State University. During his time in Ohio, Justin won several Big Ten Conference awards and led his team to a 20-2 record.
In 2021, Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons both had their eyes on Justin Fields. Eventually, the Falcons chose Kyle Pitts while the Bears made the trade for Fields. Justin was drafted as a backup quarterback to starter Andy Dalton. Green Bay Packers player Aaron Rodgers commented on the trade by praising Fields as a talented addition to the Chicago Bears. The player signed a four-year rookie contract with the team and received an 11 million signing bonus. In the 2021 season, he struggled to find a connection with wide receiver Allen Robinson, who left Chicago Bears in 2022. Fields' stats this season are 149.9 passing yards per game.
