    Childhood and youth

    Richard Belzer was born on August 4, 1944, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and was raised in a Jewish family. His father, Charles Belzer, was a tobacco retailer, and his mother, Frances Belzer, was a hat maker. Belzer attended Fairfield Warde High School and later enrolled at Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts, where he studied drama.

    As a teenager, Belzer had a difficult time fitting in and was often picked on by his peers. He found solace in watching movies and television shows and began to develop an interest in acting and comedy. He would often perform impressions of famous actors and comedians for his friends and family.

    After college, Belzer moved to New York City to pursue a career in comedy.
