Here Nicholas attended School for Creative and Performing Arts to develop his singing talent. Later he pursued acting at the University of Southern California. To be closer to his family, he transferred to Miami University, where he studied sports medicine. Nicholas was a student of medical faculty when his friend convinced Nick to devote his life for music and form a vocal group. As a result, he dropped out of college and joined a boyband 98 Degrees.
The singer has a junior brother Drew Lachey, stepsister and two adopted siblings. As a teenager, Nicholas attended high school with Carmen Electra.
In the middle of the 90s, he sang in a boyband 98 Degrees along with his brother Drew Lachey, Justin Jeffre and Jeff Timmons. The second album of the band brought them a big success when the album was sold over 10 million records. In the 2000s 98 Degrees recorded songs for animated movies "Pokemon" and "Mulan".
He raised his profile after marring pop princess Jessica Simpson. MTV made the newlyweds an unexpected offer to take part in a reality show which would film their new life. They both understood that this project would support their careers.
Thus in 2003 Nicholas and his wife Jessica Simpson started starring in the reality show "Newlyweds." To their delight, the TV show was a phenomenal success and gained wide popularity across the country. The twosome got a reward as a Favorite show in 2004.
Despite the success on the TV screen, Lachey met some difficulties in his singing career. In 2004 the singer released his solo debut album which occurred to be a commercial failure. At the same time, the success of "Newlyweds" helped a brown-haired hunk to start his acting career. In 2004-2005 he played a recurring character on series "Charmed". He also appeared on 'I'm with her", "Nick and Jessica Variety Hour" and "Nick and Jessica's Family Christmas".
Soon the show was closed. Nick underlines their poor relationship were critical inputs; he said the following about Jessica Simpson:
"Jessica and I began playing these parts even when we were by ourselves. It became a really blurred line. There was a question about what truly was our reality."
Nicholas and Jessica officially divorced in 2006. This fact devastated Nick, but he continued to work and released his second album. It was sold over 500,000 copies domestically and was certificated Gold. Here he managed to channelize his emotional outburst. The song of the album “What's Left of Me" became an immediate hit. It was included in top songs in 2006 and reached the sixth position in the Billboard Hot 100. “What's Left of Me" became the best break up song of all times.
Besides, Nick continued his acting career. He appeared in "One Tree Hill” and took part in the documentary TV series "Behind the music" where famous artists gave interviews. In 2009 he produced a musical reality show about students of Creative and Performing Arts "Taking the Stage." He was a host of The Sing-Off, and a contestant on Stars Earn Stripes.

But in 2005 there were many rumors about cracking of the pair. The gossips proved when Jessica announced their legal divorce due to irreconcilable differences.
Nick was quite devasted by Jessica's decision but continued to work as an actor and singer. Waiting for the finalization of their divorce, Nick was in several romantic affairs with Hollywood stars. Thus he was linked to Kristin Cavallari and Kim Kardashian.
