Marilyn Manson: biography

Marilyn Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, was born in the Canton, Ohio. His parents’ professions were not connected with show business. Mother Barbara Warner worked as a nurse, and father Hugh Warner traded furniture. The family was religious, but they attended different churches. His father was a Catholic, and the mother attended a Protestant church. They instilled in the son the love for Christianity because he regularly went to the Episcopal Church with his mother.

At the age of 5, Brian went to school, but it was not an ordinary institution. He studied at Heritage Christian School, a private educational institution for boys. He attended it to the 10th grade, and then the family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he studied for the last two years at Cardinal Gibbons High School.

Upon graduation, Brian did not enter university, but went to work in a music magazine, where he wrote articles, interviewed stars and did other tasks, holding positions of a reporter, journalist and critic concurrently. In his free time, he fulfilled his creative potential writing poems and lyrics.

In 1989, Brian Warner, together with his friend Scott Putesky, decided to create a rock band. The guys focused on the provocative image and first of all took unusual stage names. Brian became Marilyn Manson, combining the name of the famous film actress, Marilyn Monroe, and the name of the serial killer, Charles Manson.

Scott, who became Daisy Berkowitz, did the same, taking the name of female character Daisy Duke and the surname of serial killer David Berkowitz. The majority of the other team members used the same principle creating their stage names. The band was titled Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, but the name was soon shortened to Marilyn Manson because a broad advertising campaign first promoted the image of the Satanist singer.

Music

Initially, the band warmed up for the cult industrial band Nine Inch Nails. The leader of this group, Trent Reznor, helped the young band in every possible way to start their career and contributed to their popularity. It was he who proposed to rely on the show during concerts. Therefore, you can see anything at Marilyn Manson’s concerts from shaved goat heads to the musicians wearing women's lingerie.

Thus, the band became quite popular before the release of their debut album. Only in 1994, the first album Portrait of an American Family was recorded at Nothing Records, which belonged to Trent Reznor. This CD was conceptual because the songs mainly told the story of Charles Manson and the Manson Family movement. The album went gold in the USA but did not make the band more famous.

But the second album Antichrist Superstar, which was released two years later, made a noise in the whole of North America. Two songs hit the world charts. They are "The Beautiful People" and "Tourniquet." Besides, the cover version of the song "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" of the Eurythmics, which was released as a separate single, became very popular. The album Antichrist Superstar was included in the charts in more than ten countries. But besides musical recognition, the band provoked a negative reaction from Christian societies for the promotion of the image of the antichrist and using satanic symbols.

The third album was recorded in the style of glam rock and was released in 1998. It became successful immediately. In the USA, it was awarded platinum status in the first week and topped the charts in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway, and in most other countries it hit the top 20. It included such hit songs as "The Dope Show," "I Don't Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me)" and "Rock Is Dead."

The following two albums Holy Wood in 2000 and The Golden Age of Grotesque in 2003 consolidated the group’s success. Both discs went gold and topped the world charts. But subsequently, the popularity of the band decreased. Albums Eat Me, Drink Me, The High End of Low and Born Villain regularly hit the charts, but the band faced the decline of album sales. The last famous song of the group was "No Reflection," which in 2012 peaked at number 26 on the American chart. The latest official studio album was The Pale Emperor, released in 2015.

Films

The amazing womanlike image of the leader of the band Marilyn Manson attracted the attention of film producers, and he was repeatedly invited to film. In 1997, he first worked as an actor in the movie Lost Highway, a year later he played a bit part in the black comedy Jawbreaker.

He also played small roles in the horror film Rise: Blood Hunter, the documentary film Bowling for Columbine, the crime action movie Wrong Cops and the drama The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. Marilyn Manson got the most significant role in the tragicomedy Party Monster based on real events. The outrageous actor played the role of Christina Superstar.

Manson has also appeared in TV series. He has played in several episodes of Sons of Anarchy, Once Upon a Time, Eastbound & Down, and Californication, whose fan was Marilyn. There is also a biopic about the band Marilyn Manson, which was shown in 2010 on an American specialized channel. This movie features many rock and movie stars such as Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Evan Rachel Wood, Twiggy Ramirez, Sharon Osbourne, and many others.

Personal life

There is information about many love affairs of Manson. For example, the relationship with an American actress of Italian descent, Rose McGowan, almost turned into the marriage. They were officially engaged for two years, but in 2000 they broke off the engagement.

The relations with actress Evan Rachel Wood had a similar situation. The young people dated for four years, although they broke up and then reunited. The celebrities were engaged, but in 2010 separated. Besides, Manson dated such well-known women as a porn actress and model, Stoya, model CariDee English, photographer Lindsay Usich and others.

Marilyn Manson married only the star of the burlesque show, Dita Von Teese. They married in 2005 and lived together for just over a year. The initiator of the divorce was Dita, who cited the domestic violence.

Manson is a very creative person because he moved beyond music, films and an outrageous image. He is known as an artist. His watercolor paintings have been repeatedly exhibited at the best exhibitions in Los Angeles, Miami, Athens, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, and Moscow.

The musician is the author of several books, including the famous autobiography “The Long Hard Road Out of Hell," published in 1998 and the book of his paintings "Genealogies of Pain," published in 2011.
