Oona Chaplin: biography

Oona Chaplin is the Mexican theater and movie actress. The famous comic actor Charlie Chaplin and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature Eugene O'Neill are her ancestors. The audience knows the artist for her roles in the TV series Sherlock, The Game of Thrones, Black Mirror, and Taboo.

Childhood and youth

Oona was born on June 4, 1986, in Madrid into the family of a Chilean movie maker Patricio Castilla and a British-American actress Geraldine Chaplin. Due to the peculiarities of the parents’ jobs, the family had to move often. In her childhood, Oona lived in Spain, England, Scotland, and even Cuba.

The mother of the future artist took her daughter to a dance school; Oona Chaplin learned how to dance salsa and flamenco. At 15, the young woman got lucky: she was accepted to Gordonstoun School in north Scotland where Prince Charles studied. As a student, Oona participated in performances based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream; she also went to neighboring towns with her troupe to perform.

As the ambitious lady finished school, she entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where Anthony Hopkins, Timothy Dalton, Alan Rickman, and Joan Collins used to study. Similar to a talented jeweler passionate about gemstones, teachers polished the diamond of Oona’s talent.

In 2007, the young woman graduated to conquer the world of cinematography. She debuted in an episode of the British TV series Spooks; her fascinating career started.

Movies

2008 brought three projects with Chaplin: Inconceivable, Quantum of Solace, and Spooks: Code 9. The next year, the actress took the lead role in Stefano Bessoni’s Imago Mortis. In this art-house horror, Oona personified a student Arianna who decided to cooperate with her lover, Bruno (Alberto Amarilla), to do the photographic task given by Professor Caligari (Álex Angulo).

As the story runs, the young man begins to see dead students one of which leads him to a local cave abandoned long ago. Bruno finds a thanatoscope there: the instrument that helps transfer the last image that a deceased person saw before their death from their retina to paper. Bruno and Arianna have to find out how this device got to the university territory.

In January 2011, the premiere of Lee Tamahori’s The Devil's Double took place at the Sundance Film Festival. The drama is based on Latif Yahia’s book under the same title.

In the 2011-2012 TV series The Hour broadcast by BBC Two, the actress played Marnie Madden, the wife of a news presenter Hector (Dominic West).

2012 was marked with an episode of Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. The same year, the actress appeared in the American drama TV series full of X-rated scenes, The Game of Thrones based on George Martin’s novel series A Song of Ice and Fire. Oona personified Rob Stark’s (Richard Madden) wife, Talisa Maegyr. Thanks to this role, Chaplin became the laureate of the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

In August 2013, Michael Dowse’s romantic comedy What If was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan, Megan Park, and Adam Driver starred in this project.

In 2014, Chaplin got one of the main roles in Claudia Llosa’s drama Aloft. The movie tells the story of a woman who discovers she has healing power. Critics’ reviews were mostly negative.

The same year, the actress worked on the movie Purgatorio by Pau Teixidor. She also appeared in the seventh episode, the third season, of the popular series Black Mirror. This Christmas special episode pictured the life of a wealthy, capricious woman Greta, who paid much money to have her consciousness copied to a special device.

The consultant Matt meets the frightened creature in the device. He explains to the clone that she is not a real person: she has been made to control the smart house where real Greta lives. The man puts the digital woman’s body to a white room simulation; there is only a control panel for the house, and she has to serve for herself.

In 2015, the movie The Longest Ride and the series Taboo came out. The latter tells the story of an adventurous man James Delaney (Tom Hardy) who is building his own trade empire by all means. Oona took the role of James’s half-sister, Zilpha Geary; their connection is more than family-related.

In May 2017, BBC One announced the second season of Taboo. In 2016, Oona Chaplin and Tom Hughes co-starred in the sci-fi drama showing the life of a man who had his body frozen to avoid death.

Personal life

There is no information about the woman’s personal life; the media have never published anything about her romances. One can guesstimate the actress has not dated celebrities.

Fans believe that even if Oona has someone, this person is far from the movie industry: if they were a star, sneaky journalists would discover something.

Present days

The end of 2017 was marked with two big-screen movies: Tuwün that told the story of those who tried to unveil the story of their people’s origin and Carlos Marques’s As We Like It. Besides, it was announced the artist would appear in four parts of James Cameron’s Avatar franchise. The premiere of the sequel is scheduled for 2020.

Later on, Oona got a secondary role in the biopic My Dinner with Hervé (2018). Sacha Gervasi who had directed Hitchcock and worked on The Terminal and Henry's Crime scripts took up this project. The story is about the last days of the TV star Hervé Villechaize who committed suicide in 1993 when he was 50. The movie is based on the interview that Gervasi actually held with the man not long before the tragedy. Andy García, Jamie Dornan, Peter Dinklage, Mireille Enos, and Harriet Walter also appeared in the movie.

The charming Mexican successfully combines movies and the active social life: she gives interviews and participates in photo sessions for the leading international magazines, such as Vis-a-Vis, Emmy, Jot Down, and Digital. She also frequents movie premiers and exhibitions.

The woman’s height is 170 cm., and her weight is 52 kg.

Although Oona’s schedule is busy, she does not forget her fans: the star often posts backstage videos and vacation photos on her Instagram.
